Today’s intention is:
To remember.
Remember the relief, the smile, and that feeling of “done”. Remember, the perspective standing high atop the mountain.
These memories may be just what we need to help us climb another.
The After
The alarm sounds and my phone reads 6:05 AM.
Training for an ironman, I planned to bike and run this morning. But lying in bed feels much easier and more comfortable. The idea of rising, changing, riding, jogging, and sweating freezes me. I cling to the covers, juggling thoughts of resistance.
You've been here.
Staring at a blank page, dwelling on a deadline, or debating a phone call. It's all the same. It all challenges us to move, to act... to begin. Our biggest aspirations often require the smallest steps. And yet, we refuse to take them.
I eventually find my way to the bike. 72 minutes later, my smile widens with accomplishment. I breathe in fresh morning air while the sun warms my face. My heart, lungs, and legs pulse with satisfaction. Those troublesome morning thoughts have melted away. Ah, this is what it feels like. This is The After.
You've been here too.
You think, well that wasn't so bad or even, that was pretty awesome. Connect with these moments. Savor them. It's in these moments you find fuel. Observe your feelings, surroundings, and takeaways. As best you can, sear the entire, beautiful experience into your mind. Because resistance will return and you want to be ready.
Today, at least for a moment, action prevails over inaction. I humbly celebrate my small victory. I wish you a few wins as well. Let us not rest here. We have much taller mountains to climb.
The memory of today's win may be just the thing to help us begin tomorrow's ascent.
Until next week,
Don’t wait. Start small. Learn as you go.
